Sewer authority aggressive with delinquent bill collections

Southwest Delaware County Municipal Authority (SWDCMA) Board of Directors Chairman Nelson Shaffer, during last week’s meeting of the Aston Township Board of Commissioners, said to date, $700,000 of more than $2 million in delinquent sewer bills has been collected.
“We have been aggressively, but fairly, trying to bring everyone into compliance,” said Shaffer, “because those who do pay on time and in full get penalized again when we don’t collect the delinquencies of those who also use the service but don’t pay for it. We are going to continue to do what we can to get things right and hopefully in the future get a fair appraisal and assessment for the residents of Aston.”
Shaffer also offered a recap of 2011. He said the year was challenging for the authority, which included the tragic loss of employee Lawrence Fisher, who died from a work-related incident.
Shaffer said the authority has finalized a budget and is trying to contain and control whatever increase may occur.
