One of the most hotly contested races in Delaware County took place in Trainer Borough where nine Republican candidates were vying for four positions in the upcoming November general election.
Incumbent Republicans Regina Beck, Jon Mathews, Awilda Burgos and James Cassidy, Jr. were challenged by Ralph Miles, Jennifer Frazier, Marcia Kline, Teresa Yeager and Deborah Ann Mervine.
There were no Democratic candidates.
Reported results indicate a race too close to call.
At press time the numbers were: Mathews 91; Burgos 85; Cassidy 82; Frazier 79; Miles 77; Beck 76; Kline 28; Mervine 27; and Yeager 18.
Poll watchers said write-in votes have not been calculated and a final count would not be available by press time.
If the numbers hold steady, a major upset would be the unseating of longtime Council member and current council President Regina Beck.
Mayor Frances Zalewski, a Republican, went unchallenged. Zalewski is a 56-year borough resident and has been mayor for eight years.
Zalewski served on Borough Council for eight years, as president of the Trainer Community Center Committee, Board of Health, Recreation Board, and Environmental Advisory Council.
In Brookhaven, Democratic incumbent Mayor Mike Hess was unchallenged and in Parkside, Republican Thomas Deitman also ran unopposed for mayor.
Deitman, a current councilman, once served as Parkside’s mayor for several years.
Hess was appointed mayor following the death of longtime Mayor Ralph Garzia in 2009, and was re-elected to two subsequent terms.
