ArtNine students from six area schools took honors in the second annual Student Art Contest sponsored by the Art on the Avenue of the States gallery in Chester last week.

Winning elementary school students were: First place: Shalie Thomas (Chester Charter School for the Arts); second: Jordan Shakley (Chester Charter School for the Arts); third: Caitlin Carvajal (Swedesboro Elementary School); and honorable mention: Sa’Mar Stewart (Chester Charter School for the Arts).

Winning high school students were: First place: Virginia Rodowsky (Padua High School); second: Audrey Oter (Sun Valley High School); third: Marcel Wheeler (Ridley High School); honorable mention: Nashia Clark (Chester High School); and Ali Ferver (Padua High School) won the Regional Center for Women in the Arts award.

Prizes ranged in value from $20 to $150 and noted local artist Lois Schlachter was the judge of the show.  She is a well-known artist who was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts). She is an abstract expressionist.

Members of the children’s chorus from the Chester Charter School of the Arts also performed.
