CHESTER UPLAND TO RELOCATE THE VILLAGE SCHOOL NEXT YEAR

Chester, PAAugust 24, 2011…The Chester Upland school district announced today that the Village at Chester Upland will have a new school home when students and staff return from winter recess in January 2012. At that time, the district will relocate all Village school students and staff to its Smedley school facility, which is now available for use since the district is merging its two choice high schools into the Science and Discovery school building in September to offset costs.

Acting Superintendent Dr. Joyce Wells issued a letter yesterday informing parents of Village students that the elementary school will relocate in January because the “millions of dollars” Chester Upland lost in state funding “prohibited” the district from renewing its lease agreement with the owner of the current Village facility, the Flynn Co. The district’s lease with Flynn expires in February 2012.

Wells’ letter assured parents that the Smedley building, which the district owns, “will comfortably house all 500 students currently enrolled at the Village.” The letter also confirmed that the Village’s current operation and programming will not change when the school relocates to Smedley and stressed that the school principal, curriculum, teaching staff, non-teaching staff and “Village” name will all remain the same. The New Pathways program will also continue to operate as part of the Village school.

The only change will be a new and improved school building at a different location,” Wells wrote, referencing recent renovations the district made to the Smedley building, which boasts a separate auditorium and gymnasium unlike the Village’s current facility.

Chester Upland will host two parent information meetings next week regarding the relocation process for the Village school. Wells will facilitate both meetings, which are exclusive to parents and guardians of Village students and will take place at the Smedley school site to provide an opportunity for parents to tour the building.

We look forward to providing parents with all the details about our plans to relocate the Village and answer any questions they may have about our transition process,” Wells said. “Our focus is on ensuring the smoothest relocation experience possible for every Village student and we look forward to working together with our parents to achieve this goal.”
